According to "The Metropolis Revisited"
by Robert Whetsell, the old Elkins High School was built in 1925 for
$177,000. The old high school is located on South Davis Avenue, at the
north end of the Elkins Fairgrounds near First Ward School. On February 20,
1926, the Board of Education formally accepted the new Elkins High School
Building. The third floor of Central School building had served as the home
for high school students until 1926. According to "The Elkins Centennial
Album 1890-1990" by Donald Rice, the high school students at Elkins Central
School moved mid-year to the new Elkins High. The 1926, 115 students
graduated at Elkins High School. On September 4, 1936, Wimer Stadium was
officially dedicated to Frank C. Wimer.
NOW:
The new Elkins High School was built in 1993 at a cost of 12.7
million dollars, under the name Forest Hills High School, but was changed
back in 1995 to Elkins High School. The new high school is located on
Kennedy Drive, south of Elkins on US Rt. 219-250. The school's student capacity
is between 990 to 1050 students.
