Dear Old Elkins High School
By Mary Frances Heck Carver
Dear Old Elkins High School, we remember you being so majestic
and so dear.
Who would have guessed that 1952 to 1956 would be your magical years?
You welcomed us with open arms as we rushed through those double doors.
Today our footprints still remain where we traveled those hardwood floors.
We stormed your halls and crammed your lockers and we waved to
all our friends.
Little did we know at that youthful time those precious friendships would never
end.
You gave us the best, Mr. Hamilton, Hume, Coaches Wimer, and Irwin, and Simmons
too.
Mr. Gibson, Ms.Tyre, Polly and Spike and Prof and Portia, H.B... and Ms.Cox was
new.
The guys were so cute with their pegged blue jeans and their
hair in that ducktail style.
The girls wore ponytails and poodle skirts, scarves... and strapless gowns once
in awhile.
Ball Games, Track Meets, Dances and Clubs, the Band marching in Orange and
Black.
Hagans and Neals and the Cave and the "Y" are wonderful memories as we
look back.
"Not Finished Just Begun" was the motto chosen as
Freshman when we set our goals.
The class flower was the Yellow Rose so it would match our colors of Blue and
Gold.
Then as Juniors we decorated for the Prom-- "How Deep Is The Ocean"
was the theme.
The Senior Play was "Seven Sisters," then Graduation and time to start
living our dreams.
Yes, we were the greatest but the best was yet to be and we
knew that way back then.
The kids of yesterday changed the world, as we became leaders as ladies and men.
We contributed much in a challenging time. We carried our load and we did our
part.
Dear Old Elkins High School, you taught us well and you are the one who gave us
heart.
From these very humble beginnings we each strived to climb the
ladder to success.
We raised our families and we served our nation and our God and now it is time
to rest.
Let's not forget our classmates who have gone ahead and already told us their
goodbyes.
We know that they left us early so they could plan "Our Great Reunion"
in the sky!
Dear Old Elkins High School, you gave us wonderful times
filled with so many thrills.
We sang your fight song and we cheered your name all over the West Virginia
Hills.
Wherever life took us we carried your spirit and we spread it over the sea and
the land.
Oh those were the fun and carefree days when everything was exciting and so
grand.
Now your halls are silent but you, THE SLEEPING GIANT, are
like a monument today.
The love and everlasting pride and loyalty you gave followed these Tigers all
the way.
You've aged like us but on this journey we both have had a great and marvelous
time.
But it was the CLASS OF 1956 that saw the horizon and made EHS really shine.
So here's to Elkins High School loyal through and through...
